Opening a Free Online Course on Advanced Writing

The Career Development Centre CDC at the University of Zakho informs its students from all departments whose English language level is advanced that the mentioned Centre in corporation with the language  Centre are opening a free online course on Advanced Writing. 

It is worth mentioning that, the course is going to be presented by (Mr. Fakher Zibari) who has taught in many Institutes and universities in the USA. 

The goal of this course is to provide students with advanced instruction in the writing process and transition from writing sound paragraphs to connecting them to construct essays. Students learn to use increasingly complex transitional structures, create thesis statements and conclusions, and edit their work for completeness, logic, and balance. 

It is noteworthy that, students who successfully complete the course will be able to use pre-writing strategies such as brainstorming and mind mapping, to draft and revise their compositions, and to use more advanced structures such as passive voice, quotations, and reported speech to add variety to their writing. Compositions are developed through the process of peer critiquing and editing. 

The topics that are going to be discussed in the course are the following: 

1. What is a paragraph? Topic sentences and controlling ideas; supporting sentences; building better sentences; identifying verbs and fragments. 

2- Language focus: nouns and noun forms; brainstorming topic, supporting, concluding sentences; building better vocabulary; original student writing. 

3- What makes a good paragraph; purpose statements; recognizing person; identifying audience: using clear, descriptive language; building better sentences; clear pronoun reference.

4- Descriptive paragraphs; comparison paragraphs; building better sentences; subject-verb agreement; word forms 5- Cause and effect paragraphs; classification paragraphs; building better sentences; original student 

writing: classification paragraph; building a better vocabulary. 

6- Organization of a classification essay: from example paragraph to example essay; finding word forms in essays; connectors and transitions; using passive voice and adjective clauses. 

7- Organization of a Cause-Effect Essay; from example paragraph to example essay; brainstorming and outlining practice; common cause-effect structures; expressing past actions. 

By the end of the course, the participants are going to have an exam and they are going to be rewarded with a certificate of completion.

Time: From 8:00 p.m to 10:00 p.m.

Two days a week  Saturday and Sunday.
