The Korean Consulate in the Kurdistan Region, in collaboration with the Kurdistan Chronicle newspaper, the Kurdistan Development Organization, and the Shinglbana Center, organized a specialized scientific competition in the field of economics for university students across the Kurdistan Region.

Representing the University of Zakho, Ms. Somaya Ibrahim Khalil, a student from the Department of English Language, participated in this event by presenting her research project. Following a rigorous evaluation process, her project was selected among the top six submissions from various universities in the region to advance to the final stage of the competition.

The final presentations took place on Monday, August 25, 2025, in Erbil, with the attendance of a distinguished panel comprising members of the Economic Committee, political representatives, consular officials, and editors from the Kurdistan Chronicle. Each project was evaluated based on its originality, analytical depth, and potential contribution to the economic development of the region.

After a two-month review period, the results were officially announced, revealing that the project of Ms. Somaya Ibrahim Khalil from the University of Zakho secured third place among all participants—an achievement that highlights both her academic excellence and the quality of research at the University of Zakho.

The project, entitled “The Diversity of Economic Sectors in the Kurdistan Region: Which Sector Holds the Greatest Potential for Growth and Revenue?”, provided a comprehensive analysis of the various economic sectors within the region, assessing their strengths, challenges, and future prospects.

It is worth noting that during her presentation, Ms. Khalil represented the University of Zakho with distinction, and in recognition of her outstanding performance, she was later awarded an honorary certificate by the university administration.
