Dalal Unit for Teaching Arabic to Non-Native Speakers

The Unit's Vision:

Based on our vision of the roles of the Arabic language, the requirements for its empowerment, and the stakes of its education in the Islamic world, we decided to establish the Dalal Unit for Teaching Arabic to Non-Native Speakers at the University of Zakho, to be a pioneering Unit in building national capacities working in the field of the Arabic language in general, and the Arabic language for non-native speakers in particular. The Unit's mission is to develop the ability of students at different linguistic levels; to become proficient in the Arabic language (as a second language), through an integrated linguistic curriculum based on acquiring the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Unit's Objectives:

 

1. The student gets to know the sound atmosphere and general tone of the language.

 

2. Master the pronunciation of the sounds of the Arabic language correctly from the exits of its letters, in a manner acceptable to the Arabic ear.

3. Acquire the skill of listening and distinguishing Arabic sounds in their combination and isolation.

4. Linking the image to the phonetic word that represents it, and the written symbol that represents the sound.

5. Training in writing the written Arabic alphabet and its words from right to left.

6. Knowing the weights of the Arabic word.

7. Learning a reasonable number of nouns and verbs with high frequency in the language in preparation for using them in daily life.

8. Training in active dialogue, to learn simple linguistic structures, such as using question and answer formulas and simple attributive sentences with their nominal and verbal components.

9. Knowing the function of the word in the sentence through simplified sentences and texts, and linking them through the image of the structure and the function of the word (parsing) and the semantic content of the sentence, and training intensively through the offered courses.

10. Knowing the colors of Arabic expression with a complex structure, such as using Arabic language styles such as interrogation, conditional and vocative.

11. Using the Arabic dictionary in a correct manner, especially that prepared according to the modern alphabet.

12. Knowing the methods of Arabic rhetoric.

13. Mastering the rules of Arabic writing and punctuation.

14. Mastering the art of written and oral expression.

15. Analyzing poetic and prose texts.

16. Understanding and analyzing spoken and written texts linguistically and literarily.

17. Presenting Arabic within its standard, eloquent context.
