Assist. Prof. Dr. Lazgin Abdi Jamil, the President of the University of Zakho, attended the International Universities Council Conference about Democracy and Terrorism. The conference was entitled The Pioneering Role of Universities in the Global Democratization and was held and sponsored by the European University of Lefke in Cyprus between October 21st 2015 and October 25th 2015. The International University Council aims to unite universities globally under its framework seeking to maintain national values, concepts and beliefs of diverse cultures by combining higher institutions on the international level.
University presidents, state ministers, government officials and state bureaucrats were amongst the attendants. The workshop was organized in five panels; the results were discussed in the General Assembly Result Statement. Presidents of participating universities met with the President, the Prime Minister, the Speaker of the Parliament, and the Minister of Higher Education of Cyprus and were widely covered by the media, magazines, newspapers and TV stations.
As a result, the University of Zakho established strong ties with the European University of Lefke by signing a memorandum of understanding which will serve mutual interests between both universities in the fields of cooperation and collaboration between both universities in serving the mutual interest in all scientific fields.
On the 26th of October 2015, Assist. Prof. Dr. Lazgin Abdi Jamil visited the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) and was warmly received and welcomed by the Rector of EMU, Prof. Dr. Abdullah Y. Öztoprak. The presidents of both universities discussed university structures, facilities, internationalization of the universities and collaboration between both universities. In addition, they agreed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding between the University of Zakho and the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) which will be signed at the University of Zakho and also scheduled the visit of Prof. Dr. Abdullah Y. Öztoprak, the Rector of EMU, to the Kurdistan Region and the University of Zakho.
